YouTube Video VVVVdVdmRzNJWGhwem8zSFpZVTNMa3lRLlBjTHBXTDNDZVJr Aditya, another name of Surya or the Sun, is regarded as a visible divinity and the Centre of Creation. The Sun is the celestial form of fire; source of light, warmth, knowledge and therefore of Life. It is the Eye of the World, Maker of the Day and Source of Time. As the Enchantment of the Supreme Being, the Sun is envisaged as perpetually creating, supporting, and destroying life, pleasing all by its multi-fold brilliance, thus, deserving of our adoration. The dance is performed by two generations of performers – senior and junior dancers of Sutra.

Sutra Foundation, a bastion of traditional and contemporary arts, is bequeathed to Malaysia by one of its sons, Datuk Ramli Ibrahim. It carries into the future the thread of Ramli’s vision and contribution to the Malaysian arts scene by striving to develop the breadth, depth of Malaysian performing arts, which stimulate the creative spirit of cross-cultural Malaysia. Sutra Foundation has presented outstanding national and international artists and has trained professional and creative staffs in the areas of lighting, stage management, theatre production and administration. Various cultures come together in Sutra to forge a unique ‘sutra’ bond that fosters a universal yet distinctively Malaysian interpretation of the arts.

Sutra Foundation has been active during the challenging Covid-19 pandemic period in spearheading continuous and sustained activities in the performing arts (Sutra Dance Theatre), exhibitions (Sutra Gallery) and teaching (Sutra Academy). Immense care goes into crafting a Sutra Production – be it in terms of impeccable design input, selection of dance talent, devising sets, costumes, lighting or graphics and marrying them to the choreographic intent and presentation to assure a flawless production. Sutra Foundation is guided and administered by its Board of Trustees.

Tapak 4 is inspired by the movement vocabulary of ‘Silat’, a Malay martial art form practiced widely in Malaysia and Southeast Asia, drawing from Silat’s philosophy of ‘surprise’ or ‘attack and defend.’

ASK Dance Company (ADC)is a professional dance collective, specialising in providing training, workshops, master classes, performances, choreography courses as well as undertaking collaborative projects in traditional and contemporary dance genres.  The company's philosophy expounds that to live life to the fullest, one must continuously learn, and be unafraid to ‘ask’ pertinent questions. ASK’s dance productions serve as a platform for this pertinent dialogue and questing - from issues about disenfranchisement to celebrations of life. ASK Dance Company has become a shining example of Malaysia’s plurality, which is danced through its repertoire and represented by the ethnicity of its company members. The company aspires to become a unique force with a distinct Malaysian identity providing employment, experience and a career pathway for outstanding dancers and choreographers. Further, ADC intends to play a significant role in bridging boundaries and breaking the glass ceilings and to bring this encounter into the forefront of national and international consciousness.ASK Dance Company…Dancing the Malaysian!

Inspired by the beauty of Joget Gamelan, the traditional Malay dance of Kipas Gemalai begins as seven fair court maidens celebrate their companionship and the beauty and joy of Life. One maiden hears the tintinnabulation of the gamelan from a distance. Intrigued and moved by the enchanting sound, the maidens are compelled to move to the music, creating a mesmerizing dance together that envelops the atmosphere, filling it with love, grace and blessings.

DiDance was incorporated in 1996 by Zaridah Abdul Mallik primarily as a centre dedicated to preserving the traditional Malay art forms especially in dance and music. One of the objectives of DiDance is to promote public awareness of both traditional and classical court dances and music, through establishing it as a dynamic centre of performing arts via training in the traditional, classical and contemporary techniques. Dancers of DiDance are groomed to honour and maintain the spirit of traditional Malay dance and music alive. The performing group has received national and international acclaim for their excellent and innovative dance presentations.

Seni Reog is traditional folk music and dance of Reog Ponorogo, East Java, practised in Johor, Malaysia by migrant communities of Javanese descent. The Reog tradition traces its narrative origin to the legend of King Kelono Sewandono of Ponorogo, the beautiful Princess of Kediri, and a ferocious Singa Barong, protector of the princess’ kingdom. The Singa Barong mask, a centre-piece of the Reog tradition, dramatically depicts a lion’s head-mask which exceeds 2 metres (7 feet) high and weighs 50kg (110 pounds) and elaborately decked with peacock feathers. Other prominent figures are the valiant and playful Bujang Ganong masked-dancers and the alluring Jathilan dancers who ride on woven horses. A Reog performance is accompanied by a musical ensemble, consisting of gong, kenong, gendang, tipong, angklung and slompret.

PUSAKA is a non-profit organisation established to conduct research and create a comprehensive documentary archive of traditional performance in Malaysia, while strengthening the viability of these traditions at the community level. PUSAKA works intimately with some of the most distinguished performers of the wayang kulit, mak yong, manora, main puteri and dikir barat traditions of Kelantan. It is expanding its work to embrace traditions from other states in Malaysia, including the mah meri of Selangor, kompang, wayang purwo and kuda kepang of Johor, Portuguese dance of Malacca, and teochew puppetry of Penang. PUSAKA also attempts to respond to present-day challenges that threaten the continuity and integrity of traditional performance. Through organising regular public performances and local instruction projects, PUSAKA aims to enhance the viability of traditional performance. In this way, PUSAKA supports the transmission of these performance traditions to a succeeding generation, while providing alternative performance platforms that, above all, preserve the dignity and stature of the traditional performer. In all its work, PUSAKA seeks to establish a deep interaction with aspects of history and contemporary ideas while illuminating and providing an intellectual context for the contemplation of broader perspectives on aspects of culture, tradition and ideas.

Kumpulan Sri Wahyuni

PUSAKA works closely with Kumpulan Sri Wahyuni from Parit Raja, Batu Pahat, Johor. Established in 1970, Kumpulan Sri Wahyuni is among the foremost custodians and bearers of cultural heritage and
tradition among the large community of Javanese descendants in Johor, Malaysia. They are the most acclaimed masters of the majestic Malaysian Reog Ponorogo tradition and adept in the wayang kulit Purwo and Gamelan traditions. Sri Wahyuni has performed at numerous Festivals and is often invited as the opening performance at official ceremonies and festive occasions. Sri Wahyuni’s impressive and energetic performances never fail to draw a crowd.

ACX Aku Cinta Jarak 1 meter

I love that the virus changes the world
I love that the virus changes our lifestyle
I love that we will have to live with the virus if we don’t want to change
I love that the distance between us is just 1 metre
I love that the only distance between us and death is also 1 metre

ACX (Arts, Culture & Experimental) Productions takes a positive and offbeat stance on the covid-19 pandemic with a multimedia performance that makes comment (Mandarin, English, Malay) on the way of the world today that is humorous yet poignant. Please note: all “mask” props used in the production will be upcycled and reinvented for future theatrical use. https://gerakangin.com

Cempaka Performing Arts Company (CPAC) DAMES & DIMES, ENCORE
Ju4Ji2 is a festive piece with an artistic soul. It starts with a solo drummer who is slowly joined by his fellow drummers, marking the journey of the drumming tradition as the drummers play rhythms from deep within their souls. After merging as a team, the drummers perform rhythms and movements motivated by the unseen, unspoken but deeply felt connection between one another.

HANDS PERCUSSION (HANDS), a renowned Malaysian percussion ensemble, has been creating a veritable explosive bang in the music scene in Kuala Lumpur since 1997 with its ground breaking and innovative performances. The ensemble’s performances have been highly regarded and admired as they endeavour to promote their cultural heritage simultaneously introducing new dimensions to theatrical drumming by venturing into contemporary percussion music and exploring different cultures. The team has produced and performed extensively in the arts scene as well as at corporate events.

Today, HANDS has nine (9) full-time performers, nineteen (19) part-time performers and ten (10) trainee performers. The performers are divided into two (2) performing groups – the original core members, HANDS 1; and HANDS 2 formed in 2005. A HANDS Gamelan Group, was formed in 2007 when a custom made gamelan set was acquired.

Writer & Director, Ard Omar from STEPS brings you the powerful drama “Sugeh” inspired by the Javanese philosophy from RMP Sosrokartono’s “Sugeh Tanpo Bondo” with original music by Sujiwo Tejo

Description :
STEPS Writer & Director Ard Omar's "Sugeh" revolves around the father-daughter conflict of tradition, heritage and today's modern world. Omar plays the part of a “Tok Dalang” (Shadow Master of Wayang Kulit) frustrated with his unattentive pupil, his daughter who he pushes hard to entrench the rules of the ancient Malay arts - silat, wayang kulit, topeng - but to no avail. A powerful drama sensitively contemporized against a poignant music and song backdrop.

Dancing Mei Mei & Celebration Yangge Ribbon Dance

Chinese dance has kept to its original spirit of Han classical and folk dance genres found in China brought by immigrants to Malaysia in the mid 20th century. Over the decades, Chinese Malaysian choreographers adopted and incorporated fresh ideas and elements, reflecting other ethnic influences of both Asian and Western cultures. This organic process has enhanced the techniques and repertoire generating vibrant dance movements which are contemporary in treatment and Chinese Malaysian in identity.

The Performing Arts of Todern was founded in 1991 by Wong Kit Yaw, Woon Fook Sen, Wong Yor Lan and Ng Piek Yan. Since its inception, Wong Kit Yaw, as the artistic director of the team, has directed and collaborated with numerous national and international artists and groups in both traditional and contemporary dance projects. The blend of creativity and originality in their productions has been acclaimed by both critics and audiences throughout Malaysia. The Performing Arts Of Todern has demonstrated considerable commitment to the development of Malaysia's dance fraternity by its contribution towards Malaysia's cultural life. It has a prominent place not only in community expression but also in the creative and active social fabric of the community.

 “How Beruang lost his tail”

How Beruang (Bear) lost his tail begins with Sang Kancil’s (Mousedeer) need to save his children from Harimau’s (Tiger) cave. Monyet (Monkey) snitches on them and brings both Harimau and Beruang to the cave. However, Sang Kancil quickly hatches a plan of escape that frightens off Harimau and leaves a tailless Beruang.

Sang Kancil is a tiny little deer (hence the name “Mousedeer”) found in the Malaysian forest. Delightful stories revolve around this sweet and very brave little mammal that uses craftiness, cunning and brilliant smartness to survive and outwit larger and formidable creatures who roam the equatorial landscape - like tigers and bears and mischievous monkeys.

For Gerak Angin’s 2020 debut, Kuala Lumpur Shakespeare Players (KLSP) moved away from Shakespeare for a bit and focused on this delightful tale written by KLSP director, Lim Kien Lee. https://gerakangin.com

From an informal group that started in 2011, KLSP established themselves as the only theatre company in Malaysia that focuses on Shakespeare’s works.

Each year, they draw a diverse audience to watch Shakespeare performed live. They do so without running away from his language.

KLSP’s production in 2017, SD: Macbeth traveled to 14 locations, performed more than 40 shows to over 6500 pairs of eyes. Apart from KL, they have traveled to Langkawi, Penang, Ipoh, Nilai, Seremban and Johor Bahru as well as overseas to Manila (Philippines) and Seoul (South Korea).

Their mission is to take Shakespeare to every state in Malaysia, and eventually to all countries in Southeast Asia.

Beyond the annual Shakespeare Demystified Series, KLSP actively provides training and workshops based on the concept of “Learning Through Shakespeare”. They work with students from primary and secondary schools, colleges and universities to deepen the students’ appreciation of the Bard, to improve their communication skills, or to explore various stage crafts, all rooted in Shakespeare’s text and works.

To contribute to theatre development locally, KLSP also provides free training sessions to actors dedicated to honing their skills. They generously share ideas, knowledge and experiences in making good theatre. KLSP hopes to help expand the pool of actors who are serious about their work, and who appreciate that true artists do not avoid hard work.

KL Shakespeare Players "How Beruang lost his tail"
Malaysia, known for its tropical natural landscape, is endowed with a wealth of floral diversity. Energetic beats of traditional drums, resonating with the "cling clang" of Cak Lempong, weave a picturesque dream-fantasy of cultural richness, cradled by The Poems of Shading
Leaves.

Dua Space Dance Theatre was established by Anthony Meh and Aman Yap in 1998. Since then, the company has created various productions, such as ‘TWO’, ‘Scream-A Response to Munch’, ‘The Legend of Hou Yi and Chang Er’, ‘Anak Malaysia’, ‘Black & White@VARIATION’, ‘DEN’, ‘Ancient Inscriptions’, ‘The Tree’, ‘MW-Men and Women Seeking for Love’, ‘The Lotus Sutra’ and many more, ranging from, and inspired by, ethnic to contemporary dance forms. Dua Space currently focuses on sharing dance with the local communities and building a dance network with its base area in Puchong, resonating with the name of ‘Dua Space’ which carries the meaning of ‘interactive sharing’.

The company has performed internationally, taking in China, Korea, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, Pakistan, Indonesia, London, Philippines, India, Spain, and South American countries such as Peru, Chile, Argentina and Paraguay.

Dua Space Dance Theatre “The Poems of Shading Leaves”
Beringin Sakti 2.0 is a fitting performance choice to open GerakAngin, Malaysia’s first Virtual Arts Festival. Geng Wak Long (GWL), Malaysia’s renowned blueblood family of traditional Malay musicians showcases the opening rituals in Kelantanese classical Malay music by incorporating musical and dance-theatre elements of makyong, main puteri, wayang kulit, tari inai, dikir barat, silat jawi and an ensemble of serunai.

Kelantan is one of Malaysia’s 13 states located in the north-eastern corner of Peninsular Malaysia. It is renowned for its unique culture, arts and crafts. GWL originates from this state, specializing in Kelantanese traditional art genres such as the Neo Authentic Kelantanese Traditional music of Malaysia and Contemporary Music. GWL also play other genres such as fusion (World Music), Malaysian syncretic traditional music (Ghazal, Malay Asli Music, Malay Gamelan, Keroncong) and Malaysian pop music. For the Neo Authentic Kelantanese Traditional Music, GWL specialises in a wide range of the traditional genres such as wayang kulit (Kelantan shadow puppet theatre), dikir barat, Kelantan silat, mak yong, tari inai, asyik, rebana ubi, kertuk, tarik selampit, main puteri@teri and Kelantanese traditional orchestra.

Geng Wak Long “Beringin Sakti 2.0”
“Move Wind” (literal). Gerak Angin is the term used to describe a musical overture made by the performers of spiritual healing traditions in Kelantan, such as Mak Yong and Main Puteri. It is led by a Rebab (spiked fiddle) player to evoke spiritual energy among the musicians, dancers, the space and even the audience.
