ฤvartana: A Return, Transformed
Friends,
On 12 and 13 September 2026, Delhi-based Odissi dancer Rahul Varshney returns to the Sutra stage with ฤvartana, a solo recital at Amphi-Sutra.
In music and dance, ฤvartana is one complete cycle of a tฤlaโa return to where one began. Yet a return is never the same when one has travelled far. ฤvartana is not repetition, but repetition transformed by experience.
Twenty years after first performing at the Sutra Foundation in Malaysia, Rahul returns to the same stage. This is not a comeback, but a continuum: memory, experience and the present converging in a single moment.
Across more than three decades of sฤdhanฤ, his relationship with Odissi has evolved. What once required effort has become instinct; what was learnt through the body has deepened into understanding. Each return has carried him further.
Thus, ฤvartana is not a circle, but a spiralโreturning to the same orbit, yet never quite the same place.
Like a river that leaves its mountain source and gathers depth through every bend, Rahulโs journey has been shaped by time, discipline and discovery. A recipient of the Best Male Soloist from Attendance Award 2025, he returns to Sutra as both the same dancer and a transformed one.
Through the sacred and expressive language of Odissi, ฤvartana traces this journeyโfrom invocation to liberation, from rhythm to expression, from discipline to surrender.
A return. A refinement. A renewal.
The spiral turns again.
Sutra.
