Friends,
Some photographers take pictures. Eric Peris has spent a lifetime learning how to see.
For more than six decades, his camera has been his companion, witness and quiet teacherโrecording not merely what is before the lens, but what lies beneath it. At 87, Eric Peris remains one of Malaysiaโs most distinctive and prolific photographers, a pioneering figure of Malaysian modern photography whose artistic journey has been shaped as much by inheritance as by instinct.
That inheritance is deeply personal. From his father, an established royal artist of Johor, came an early understanding of art and discipline. From his mother, his muse and guiding light, came an intuitive sensitivity to beauty. His sister opened another doorโthe world of nature, gardens and the quiet revelations of the living landscape.
But what Eric inherited, he transformed.
At the heart of his photography is a Buddhist sensibility: an awareness that life is Mayaโfleeting, impermanent, forever dissolving even as we try to possess it. Power fades. Status passes. Wealth becomes dust. What remains, perhaps, is the moment of seeing.
And so Eric approaches Nature almost as a monk approaches an offering. His camera becomes an alms bowl, held out to the world; Nature fills it with whatever gift it chooses to give that day. A shaft of light. The architecture glorious of Nature; of a leaf or even a limestone hill. The fleeting geometry of a flower. A silence of sunset between shadows of hand-coloured darkroom prints.
There is no conquest in this gaze. There is only gratitude.
Inherited Gaze is therefore more than a retrospective glance at an extraordinary body of works. It is an invitation to look againโto slow down and recognise the beauty that is constantly appearing, changing and disappearing around us.
With 47 exhibitions to his credit, including more than 23 solo exhibitions at Sutra Gallery, Ericโs body of work speaks not only to extraordinary longevity, but to an uncommon consistency of extraordinary vision and quality.
For decades, Sutra has had the privilege of witnessing that journey, with its exhibitions curated by Sutra Trustee Sivarajah Natarajan.
At 87, Eric Peris is still looking.
And perhaps that is the greatest lesson of all: to keep looking is to remain open to life.
