Friends,

Sutra is privileged to present Guru Shanmuga Sundaram, in ฤ€๐™‰๐˜ผ๐™‰๐˜ฟฤ€, an intimate Bharatanatyam recital at Amphi-Sutra.

A devoted disciple of the famous Bharatanatyam guru, the late KJ Sarasa, Shanmughan, has been the curator & artistic director of a successful Bharatanatyam festival, Sarasa Natya Mala for the last 14 years, dedicated to his Guru, the late Smt KJ Sarasa.

Shanmughanโ€™s development as a senior male dancer of Bharatanatyam in Chennai, evolved even further, under the tutelage and mentorship of Padma Shri Guru Chitra Visweswaran, one of Bharatanatyamโ€™s living repository of this tradition.

Shanmughan has also spearheaded a successful teaching and performing outreach program for Chennai trans-gender community.

Shanmughan, with his Malaysian born mother, is perhaps the rare physical manifestation of both Malaysia & India. Spiritually and artistically, however, he has totally, embraced India though he continues to keep a strong link with Malaysia.

Shanmughan shares much of Sutraโ€™s continued journey with Bharatanatyam, especially that which was connected with Chennai, a bastion of this still evolving temple dance of South India.

Shanmughan, one of the most respected and internationally recognised male Bharatanatyam dancers, is also sought after as a nattuvanar and dance guru. He has conducted many arangetrams and performed in Malaysia, besides India, the US and Europe.

When Shanmughan mentioned that he will be conducting the Bharatanatyam program of Shri Paramjothy (23 August TFA), an established Malaysian male dancer and disciple of the late Guru M Ganesan (also a senior disciple of KJ Sara.

As Pritam Das, the recent New Delhi-based dancer who performed at Amphi-Sutra, represents the dynamic male dancer of his era, Shanmughan is the quintessential male dancer of his time, especially that of the Vazhuvoor bani. Shanmughan, is elegantly pristine, unhurried and sattvic in his abhinaya.
Both represent valid and authentic reflection of their traditions, teaching and times.
