New Delhi-based Odissi dancer Rahul Varshney rose magnificently to the occasion with a convincing and mature performance of Āvartana—returning to the Amphi-Sutra stage 18 years later, not as the dancer he once was, but transformed by years of experience, reflection and sādhanā.
At nearly six feet tall, Varshney possesses a commanding physical presence, yet it is his elegance, confidence and control that truly define his dancing. He brought considerable elan and ease to the vigorous tāṇḍava passages, demonstrating strong aṅgaśuddhi: deep and assured bhangi, scintillating bhramari, excellent balance and a remarkable ability to claim and articulate space.
There was also a welcome tenderness in his abhinaya. His rendition of Rati Sukha Sāre from the Gīta Govinda—a seldom-seen composition associated with the late Guru Mayadhar Raut—was lyrical, sensual and beautifully restrained. Rather than overplaying the emotion, Varshney allowed it to unfold with subtlety and maturity.
Āvartana thus became more than a return. Like a river returning to its source, Rahul Varshney has come back carrying the depth of the journey with him—the same river, yet transformed.
