Dear Friends,
Sutra Foundation is proud to present Karuna Sagari, in Nunmai: Where small things matter in a studio performance at Sutra House on 19 & 20 April, 2024, 8pm.
Dancer & Founder Director of Bhakti Natya Niketan (Coimbatore, India), Karuna Sagari Venkatachalam is a classical Bharatanatyam dancer who endeavors to create a lingering emotional experience rather than a fleeting aesthetic impression.
For her, the art form becomes a poignant language of empathy that transcends divisive boundaries and brings people together.
Initially trained by her mother, Dr. Neela Venkatachalam, Karuna is a Kalakshetra Alumna who previously trained under Sheejith Krishna for a decade and is currently under the mentorship of dancer-choreographer, Malavika Sarukkai. Karuna holds a Masters Degree in Tamil from Annamalai University and a Masters Degree in South Asian Studies, Heidelberg University, Germany.
The inheritor of a rich oral-matrilineal legacy in poetry and music, Karuna Sagari received rigorous, in-depth instruction in bhakti spiritualism, poetics, and performance from her grandmother, Smt. Swarna Somasundaram, an esteemed scholar of classical and medieval Tamil literature. Karuna has been immersed since childhood in a centuries-old devotional corpus, and the medieval bhakti traditions of Tevaram, Tiruvasagam and Tiruppugazh.
In Nunmai, Karuna Sagari explores a series of works which will deepen our emotional understanding and appreciation of the poetry from the Sangam era.
Donโt miss Karuna Sagariโs first Bharatanatyam performance in Malaysia.
